Review: Accu-Chek Aviva Nano

The Accu-Chek Aviva Nano is one cool, small, light and incredibly portable device. It weights only 40g. I have tested this several times comparing the results with other Accu-Chek meters as well as several other brands – this little unit is reliable and accurate.

In addition to its light weight, this meter is as claimed – "Test & Go". All you do is insert a test strip, add your droplet of blood (0.6 uL), and wait a few seconds. No buttons to press for blood test readings. There is a power button, and a toggle scroller to view memory results.

The meter is pre-coded, no muss, no fuss. It takes about 5 seconds to get your test results. The meter holds 500 test results and provides 7, 14, 30 and 90 day averages (pre- and post-meal). Two CR2032 batteries power the meter and last for about 1000 readings. Battery saving modes include automatic 90-second power, power with strip insert, and 5 seconds power off when the strip is removed. The meter has both visual and audio hypo indicator. There are a total of four test reminders that you can customize. You can also set a post-meal test reminder.

The monitor is incredibly high contrast with large numbers. It is easy to view in any light – and is superb for those with eye sight challenges. The package includes a Softclix lancing device. It is not my favourite style of lancing devices because it requires insertion of a new individual needle each time you use the meter (as recommended). This is nowhere near as convenient as the Multiclix or Fastclix lancing devices. It is also worth noting that almost all of the Accu-Chek meters come with either the SoftClix or SoftClix Plus. Only the Accu-Chek Mobile includes the FastClix. If you want the MultiClix or FastClix with any other meter, you will have to purchase that separately.

To connect the Aviva Nano to a computer, you will need to get additional software and an Infra-Red cable to connect to your computer. I have not tried this functionality, but would easily assume it is as reliable and easy to use as all other Accu-Chek (Roche) products.

The picture at the right does this device justice and the picture is about the same size as the meter.

I highly recommend this either as your main meter or your backup.
